Some Soul, Gospel, Jazz and R&B Figures
Aretha Franklin ~ 76 ~ The major Soul Diva from 1960 onward. Orginaly a Gospel singer with he father, Rev Cleophis Franklin's church she was signed to Columbia in 1960 aged 18. Columbia tried to mold her as a Dinah Washington style Jazz/Pop/R&B singer with little success but she moved to Atlantic in 1967 who treated her as pure Soul singer and she preceded to have a series of classic hits including "Respect", "Do Right Woman", Think" and Chain Of Fools". She continued to have chart success into the 1990's including "Freeway Of Love" and "Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves" with the Eurythmics. She was involved with the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's and sang at the inaugurations for Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Also appeared in "The Blues Brothers".
